Aku Sorensen

Aku Sorensen

Aku Sorensen is one of the most interesting young conductors. Born in California and currently based in Finland, Sorensen has conducted various orchestras, including Lapland Chamber Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Jyväskylä Sinfonia, Pori Sinfonietta, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, and Tapiola Sinfonietta.

Sorensen’s particular interest lies in programming and curation, especially integrating less-performed repertoire and contemporary music into conceptual programs. He has led and performed numerous Finnish, European, and world premieres, reviving many forgotten works from the past. Sorensen’s passion for programming is most evident at the Luosto soi! Festival, where he has served as the artistic director since 2019.

Since 2022, Sorensen has also been the chief conductor of the Ylioppilaskunnan Soittajat.

A strong believer in audience and youth music education, Sorensen has conducted a number of youth ensembles, including the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra in California and the Western-Helsinki Music Institute Chamber Orchestra. He has also participated in a number of experimental outreach programs, including serving as the conductor of the “Kuule Minä Sävellän” scheme in 2020, which provides young people the opportunity to compose and have their pieces premiered by professional ensembles.

Sorensen graduated as a conductor from the Sibelius Academy under the guidance of Sakari Oramo and received instruction from other accomplished conductors, including Jorma Panula, Hannu Lintu, Johannes Schlaefli, Roger Norrington, Péter Eötvös, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

In the upcoming season, Sorensen will conduct, among others, the Joensuu City Orchestra and the Jyväskylä Sinfonia.
